The world has been up in arms since the recent announcement of Kylian Mbappe's transfer to Real Madrid CF. What made major headlines is also the fact that this was a free transfer! This kind of move is usually unheard of - when dealing with superstar athletes. The releasing club is more often then not, compensated heavily when they have to give one of their marquee players to another team. That's the business of professional sports. Football fans or enthusiasts who have been following the Mbappe - PSG saga, know all too well that this player has wanted to leave the Parisian club for a number of years now. Around two seasons ago, in 2022, Real Madrid expressed a keen interest in the young exciting player by offering a staggering 200,000,000 Euros to PSG as a transfer fee . The offer was denied. Some would say that was the perfect opportunity for the club to cash in and trade the player and get something in return for his market value. With that amount of liquid cash, they could have been able to sign some of the top strikers in the world to replace the Frenchman.
However, that 'window' of financial opportunity is now closed. Mbappe has been extremely strategic in his desire to exit the club. By choosing not to activate his one-year extension, this has allowed to him to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer, on a free transfer. There is no doubt that this move will leave a bitter taste in his former club's mouth, but, it is what it is and it's 100% legit! There have been no contractual violations reported thus far.
The tragic part about Kylian Mbappe's free transfer is that it isn't only a financial fumble for one club. Other clubs that contributed to the players training and development from the age of his 12th birthday until the end of his 23rd birthday, would have also been entitled to a percentage of his transfer fee(if a transfer fee had been paid). This is known as the Solidarity Mechanism, and based on the fact that Mbappe's move is to a different football association - which is Spain, the French clubs that contributed to his development from age 12-23 years old, would have been well compensated. Paris Saint-Germain, FC Monaco as well as Clairef Youth Football Club could have all been financial beneficiaries. The young Frenchman spent one season at Clairef Youth , four seasons at FC Monaco and six seasons at PSG.
The Spanish media has wasted no time in emphasizing their excitement about the breaking news. According to Skysports - they've been quoted as saying, "The saga is finally over." Mbappe equally expressed his relief and jubilation by posting pictures online of his younger self wearing Real Madrid clothing, as well as having the club players' posters on his wall. Based on that alone, it's clear that this was a move waiting to happen. It was just a matter of when. It is a testament and fulfillment of a lifelong dream for a young player. Real Madrid are the current UEFA Champions League Winners and with the addition of soon to be 18 year old and Brazilian superstar - Endrick, with Mbappe joining as well, the Spanish giants will definitely be one of the most feared football clubs in Europe.
